Our Beginning

A Workshop Built on Principles

Ridge Eagle started in a small shed in Collingwood, where founder Robert Hartley began restoring antique furniture for local collectors. Word spread about his meticulous approach, and soon clients asked him to create new pieces using the same traditional methods.

By 1992, the workshop had expanded to accommodate a full production team. Today, we occupy a converted warehouse with dedicated spaces for timber storage, milling, joinery, finishing and design consultation.

What hasn't changed is the philosophy: every piece deserves the same care whether it's a simple shelf or an elaborate dining suite. Materials are selected by hand, joints are cut with precision, and finishes are applied in multiple coats with proper curing time between each.

Material Selection

Timber with Provenance

We maintain relationships with sawmills across Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. Blackwood from the Central Highlands. Spotted Gum from East Gippsland. Tasmanian Oak from managed plantations.

Each delivery is inspected, graded and stored in our climate-controlled facility. Timber needs time to acclimatise before working — rushing this step leads to warping and cracking down the track.

For clients seeking specific grain patterns or reclaimed timber, we source through specialist suppliers and can trace most materials back to their original location.

Our Core Values

Honest Construction

Joints are structural, not decorative shortcuts. We use mortise and tenon, dovetails and finger joints where they serve a purpose. No hidden screws covered by plugs that might loosen over time.

Sustainable Practice

Offcuts become smaller projects. Sawdust is collected for local gardeners. We prioritise plantation timber and certified reclaimed wood. Finishing oils are low-VOC whenever viable.

Clear Communication

Quotes itemise materials and labour. Timelines account for proper drying and curing. If complications arise during production, you hear about them promptly with proposed solutions.

Long-Term Thinking

We design for repair and refinishing. When a table surface needs restoration in twenty years, it should be straightforward to sand back and re-oil without disassembling the whole piece.

Junior craftspeople train under experienced hands for years before taking on complex projects independently. Skills transfer through demonstration and practice, not manuals.
